Sarah A. Black, daughter of James and Mary Black, was born September 13, 1840 in Woodstock Township and departed this life January 8, 1921 at the age of 80 years, 3 months, and 25 days.  Sarah was the seventh child in her mother's family of twelve children, eight girls and four boys; ten of whom grew to majority, one boy and one girl dying while yet young.
In 1872 Sarah was converted and united with the M. E. Church at Versailles, where she has resided for the past fifty-four years.
At an age of early womanhood she was married to Milton Caddell.  This union was of short duration, her husband living only a few short months.
On April 23, 1860, she again married, Edward J. Britton.  One child blest this union, Carrie J. Dinlele of Springfield.  Britton went to the war from which he never returned.
In the year 1869 she was again married to Louis Travis, who died a few years later.
On October 16, 1876, she was united to Hillery Boss.  She became the mother of two children by this union,
Ada Barnett of Versailles and Delbert Boss of Chicago.  The husband Mr. Boss dying a few years ago.
Besides many friends and relatives left to mourn the death of this lady, are the three children and her one brother, James P. Black of Rushville:  the others of her brothers and sisters having preceded her to the world beyond.
Ever of a cheerful disposition she passed away a subject of creeping paralysis, her illness lasting over a period of two months.
